My first #bookreview is for Crystal Deception, by Doug J. Cooper.
I love new ideas for a story, and this is a great one. An action packed book that assigns an inanimate object meant for evil, yet because of the interaction with good humans, becomes an entity all its own, which works with them! In fact, it becomes friends with its humans, but only a limited few does it trust.
Jessica Tallette believes the creation will be good for humanity, the aliens who have been hovering Earth for years have an entirely different agenda known by a few humans, but not others - including Jessica. When the subterfuge is discovered, a team if humans sets out with the Crystal which is constantly learning only to discover the nefarious truth why they use humans to make the crystals. Other crystals are designed, but none become what THE Crystal is.
Old friends, and new ones are reassembled to defeat the aliens, and the outcome is not only dangerous, but deadly. Jessica is thrown into the fight as well despite the fact she has never been in any fight, simply because she is the one who has been with the crystal from its inception.
Some of them will be lost while others will be saved. You find yourself rooting for them, and saddened at their losses, because you are not expecting the characters you believe will be lost. In the end, the Crystal's deception will be a temporary fix, but its growth far exceeds its intended purpose, and when it becomes sentient with a mind of its own, it sacrifices itself surprising Jessica, and all of its friends. By this time, you will have fallen in love with the Crystal, and believe it is as much a character as either humans or aliens! You will cheer for it, and you will be sad for it as well. It's more human than inanimate.
A fast paced story that doesn't end, but continues on to Crystal Conquest, book 2 in the series! I can't wait to read it!
